Time May Change Me – Changing Times

Time May Change Me – Changing Times

The view out of my window was always a sense of enjoyment and beauty. Sadly, I took it for granted….

Even when a massive Hurricane was predicted. I took for granted the beauty would remain…. Sure the beach looked different. I didn’t know that literally it was the calm before the storm…

The day before Hurricane Sandy struck…

We evacuated our home the next day after our power was cut off at 7:30 AM and we new flooding was a definite outcome. We didn’t anticipate the storm being as bad as it was…. Until of course the home we evacuated to filled with water. Coming into our home, seeing ocean water inside was devastating. As was looking out of the bedroom window and instead of seeing the beauty seeing this…

It has been a long road ever since that day…. Not only repairing and rebuilding our home but repairing and rebuilding the beach community where we live. A community that was destroyed….

But despite the destruction, there was still beauty….

But people are strong, tough and resilient… we learned how strong we are… and we learned how strong our neighbors are.  We all worked together….

Slowly but surely, we are getting there….

And I know that soon, once again, our beach community and home will be just as beautiful as it once was…. Actually, it will be more beautiful, because never again will I or my neighbors take it for granted… We know now how precious it is and how quickly mother nature can take our beauty away….

Lucy, was born after the storm… She knows nothing of it, and for that I am thankful. But you never know what tomorrow brings, and today is Animal Disaster Preparedness Day. Please check out my friend, Caren’s blog, where I guest posted about my experience with Hurricane Sandy.

    1. Connie – lucy sends kisses back.. and you are right… this summer will be the best ever because we really understand what could have been…

  1. It is sad how tragedy often opens our eyes to how blessed we were all along. As humans we tend to take things for granted. That’s why I love animals so much. I must say that I have learned (the hard way) to take nothing for granted. I am glad things are coming together for you!

    1. Mc Guffy Ann – I know what you mean. I think sometimes we need a tragedy to help us gain perspective. It is so easy to loose sight…

    1. Lucy – I am glad too. It is really wonderful to see people working together and so many damaged and destroyed areas coming into shape…

  2. Hilary, I re-read the post on Caren’s site earlier… and it’s still just as heart-breaking so many months later. The before and after pictures all together like this really show how bad it was…

    1. Susi – I know.. I have been wanting to put pictures together for a while but couldn’t. I wish (and not at the same time) I had more pictures after the storm, but there wasn’t power in our phones to take them, nor was there time to have been spent taking them. And in a lot of ways, I don’t want to have picture reminders of images that are already burned in my brain…

  3. Of course I can’t feel all that you have been through but my heart ached for you and everyone who was affected by the hurricane. You have come so far and pray you never ever have to endure the destruction again. ((HUGS))

    1. Debby – thanks.. Unfortunately I dont think that this will be the last time that a hurricane will slam us. But next time we, and everyone effected this time, will be more prepared (I hope)

    1. Brian – she is one adorable girl who has helped us heal…. I hope normal returns, but if not, the new normal isn’t so bad, now..

    1. Missabeth – I agree with you both too… Lucy is hope. New beginnings, laughter, joy and love all rolled into a bundle of fur.

    1. Sparkle – thanks… It is so easy to take things for granted… but we have to really try not to. you never know what tomorrow will bring.

    1. Ron – thanks so much…. you are right, when done the resurrection will be sweet.. it is the journey that is sour…

  4. yet another BEAUTIFUL POST! I love how thoughtful Lucy looks gazing out the window.
THANK YOU THANK YOU for guest blogging on Cat Chat today!
I am BEYOND HONORED to have had you!

    1. Caren- ahh…. I am the thankful one… Lucy does look deep in thought. She may not understand what we went through before she came to our home, but she does know it has made her very loved here..

    1. Redsetter – you are so right… you never imagine bad things happening to you, and if you do imagine them, you really have no idea of knowing what the experience will be like

  5. Glad to see things are getting a little better. Nothing like a hurricane to draw people together and glad you made it through safely. Lucy, you be sure to be nice to your great Mom today. Happy Mother’s day to her. We know that Alex is looking down too. Take care.

    1. Marg – thanks… I know you are right. We feel Alex’s presence all the time….The storm really did draw everyone together. In a lot of ways, despite being such a horrible situation, there was a lot of good that came out of it.

  6. How moving and poignant your post is. Thank you for sharing your reflections, and for using them to reach out to others with the important message to be prepared. Hugs to you, and Happy Mother’s Day! 🙂

    1. Meowmoewmans – thank you so much…It is so important to be prepared, but so hard because you never expect that anything bad will happen to you…

    1. Mollie and Alfie – thanks… Lucy is one cutie pie… Slowly our community is getting better, it is a long road, but one we must travel…

    1. RoryBore – i love that comment too – and I agree… Lucy is my symbol of hope…. I am amazed at how strong we were when we had to be, but now I feel like it is hitting me… I will check out the video!

    1. Pip – I know… I look at some of them and I think they are so beautiful despite the destruction. You are right, I will never take the beauty for granted…

  7. I’m so glad you guys are rising up to the challenge – beauty will return. I love all the shots – especially that of Lucy looking out the window. She’s your ‘Hope’ symbol. 🙂

    1. Stacy – so many people said that Lucy is our hope symbol, and I really believe it… I know you are right.. one day it will be beautiful again 🙂
