Rescued is my favorite breed

Rescued is my favorite breed

The other day I received an email from my friends at Purina telling me about an event they are hosting, Purina Paws for a Cause.  They are donating at a total of $50,000 away to the top three pet-loving charities – Dogs on Deployment, North Shore Animal League and Adopt A Pet.  They asked for my help to spread the word and as soon as I read the email my eyes filled with tears because one of the charities hit very close to home….

North Shore Animal League…

That is the shelter that my beloved Alex was rescued from…

Sitting under dining room table

Alex was adopted about seventeen years ago from North Shore.  He was given as a gift to my husband from his girlfriend at the time.  At first my husband wanted no part of having a pet.  His girlfriend was unfazed.  She assured him that she could return the cat to the shelter the next day if he wanted, but urged him to just let the cat spend the night.  Reluctantly he agreed.  Fearful of his new surroundings the cat stayed in his carrier all night.  But then in the wee hours of the morning, ventured out and laid down on my husbands chest.  His heart melted and Alex found his forever home.

When I met Alex I loved dogs but hated cats.  I didn’t understand them.  I was afraid of them.  But Alex was different.  He adopted me almost immediately.  He made me his mom.

Alex was the sweetest, most amazing man.  We don’t know much of his past but we fear that before he was brought to North Shore Animal League he was abused.  He was always very skittish and very scared of people.  But as the years passed and our love for him grew his fear subsided.  He became quite friendly.

Alex got cancer in his tail…  We had to make the very difficult decision of amputating it.  And it was the best decision ever made.  He never missed his tail for a second.  He was so happy after the surgery, constantly wagging his little stumpy.  I truly believe that he knew that we rescued him again… He showered us with love and affection.  The year following his surgery I believe was the best year of his life.

Unfortunately it was also the last year of his life.  We had to say goodbye to our beloved boy on July 16, 2012.  Not a day has passed where we don’t miss him and think of him.    His absence is a huge hole in our hearts… But I will be eternally grateful to North Shore Animal League for taking him in and finding him a forever home…

    1. Brian – Helping other critters is Alex’s biggest wish. I know he is responsible for Lucy finding her forever home

  1. All of the cats who have lived with Mum have been rescues except for one which was a farm kitten. Mum told the farmer she wanted a female but when she took her to the vet for a check up was told to change the name as she was a he!!
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx

    1. Island cats – they really are an amazing group. Alex was an amazing boy too. I can’t believe how long he is gone..

  2. Alex was a very, very special kitty. He was a rescuer and a healer in his own right. Thanks for telling his story for us who didn’t know him.

  3. What a wonderful story about Alex and the happy impact he made on your lives.
He was indeed a special kitty and we know he will always hold a special place in your heart 🙂
    Purrs Georgia and Julie,
    Treasure and JJ

  4. Alex was indeed a grand cat among cats. The skittishness reminds me of a cat we had, one that was quite eccentric and tended to hide from people. She was very choosy as to who she’d get close to.

  5. Thank you for sharing about your life together with Alex. We love and miss that angel. Surely he and Sammy are hanging out, doing angel mancat stuff at the Bridge. Hugs to you and Marc and Lucy.

    1. Meowmeowmans – “man cat stuff” love it! yep… I know Alex and Sammy are having a blast together!

  6. A great cause and contest!
Our little Cashew is from our local rescue shelter too! I would have left there with my arms full of cats if I could have.

  7. I always love your sharing about Alex and how incredibly special he was to the two of you, Hilary. I too understand on the empty hole that will always be there. Hugs…
